Traditional heating systems assume mains gas or reliable grid electricity. Off-grid properties in West Wales — caravans, cabins, glamping pods, shepherd's huts — don't have that luxury.

Wet underfloor heating needs a boiler and plumbing infrastructure. Conventional electric UFH draws too much power for battery systems. LPG and oil are expensive, dirty, and require deliveries.

Graphene heating changes the equation. The mats draw significantly less energy than conventional electric UFH, heat up in 75 seconds, and operate at 48V DC — making them far better suited to battery-powered systems.

Haydale graphene mats convert stored energy into warm floors. Currently powered via a step-down transformer from your battery system or mains supply.

A note on direct 48V integration

The JustHeat panels operate at 48V DC but currently require a 240V mains supply via a step-down transformer. Direct 48V solar-to-battery-to-heating (eliminating the transformer) is in active R&D with Haydale. We're working with them to help bring this to market and will be the first installer in West Wales to offer it when ready.

the future of off-grid storage

We're closely following developments in sodium ion battery technology as a potential future alternative to lithium for off-grid energy storage.

The advantages are compelling — sodium ion cells are non-toxic, made from abundant seawater-derived materials, carry significantly lower fire risk than lithium, and maintain full performance at temperatures as low as -20°C. For off-grid properties in West Wales, that cold-weather resilience matters.

This isn't something we offer yet. The technology is still maturing and we want to be sure of the supply chain, installer accreditation, and long-term reliability before we recommend it to clients. When we're confident it's ready, we'll be among the first to bring it to West Wales.
